The Spare Key

I found the spare key
in the coat I had not worn
since spring.

For a moment
I could not place the door.
Then your porch came back,
the stubborn lock,
the way you called, Come in,
before I knocked.

I rang to ask
if you still wanted me
to keep it.

Of course, you said.
What if I need you?

I put it back
in the little pocket
above my heart.

I will keep it there
to remind me of you when
We are eternally apart.
