The first ripe berry
was behind the thorns.
Of course it was.
I reached too quickly,
caught my sleeve,
and stood there arguing
with a bush.
You laughed
and held the branch aside.
We ate more than we carried.
Purple on our fingers,
dust around our shoes.
At home, the empty bowl
sat waiting for a pie.
We put it in the cupboard
and made toast.
